Our sister station, WPSU-TV in State College, produced this outstanding documentary. At the heart of the program is police detective Deirdri Fishel, a 15-year veteran of law enforcement. She is the primary investigator and case manager of the State College Police Department's Victim-Centered Intensive Care Management (VCICM) Unit. The VCICM Unit investigates, coordinates, prosecutes, and responds to domestic-violence and stalking crimes throughout Centre County. Deirdri will remind you of some of the tough-as-nails female cops you see on TV but she is the real deal. Her doggedness, her sense of frustration and deep regret at the loss of Amy Homan McGee's life infuse this program and drive the search for a better way to break the cycle of violence.
Also joining us is Tina Nixon, executive director of the YWCA in Harrisburg. If you've ever met Tina, you know she's a no-nonsense advocate for women's rights and empowerment. Ultimately, ending domestic violence means empowering women to walk or run from abusive relationships and providing them with a safe haven from which to rebuild their lives. The Y does just that by offering thousands of women in our community violence-intervention and prevention services, emergency and temporary safe shelter, and domestic-violence legal assistance. Peg Dierkers, executive director of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence shares her thoughts on the panel, as well. And Sarah Keefer, whose mother, Kim Anne Houser-Keefer, was murdered by a boyfriend in May 2005 in the Highland Elementary School parking lot, will discuss her ongoing efforts to improve law-enforcement's response to incidents of domestic abuse.
"Every time I tell this I think to myself make it end differently, make it end with a happy ending, and I can't because this really happened in the life of Amy Homan McGee," Deirdri Fishel says at the conclusion of the documentary. "And so we have to ask ourselves what can we do as a community to change the ending for another victim." Add your ideas tonight at 8 on WITF-TV.
And a final note, for those who might be interested, the Pennsylvania Commission for Women sponsors its annual conference on October 14 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. It features as keynote speakers Ellen Alemany, chairman and chief executive officer of Citizens Financial Group, Inc. and RBS Americas, the North and South American operations and subsidiaries of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc.; Kelly Corrigan, an accomplished author and columnist whose book, "The Middle Place," spent six months on The New York Times bestseller list; Eve Ensler, the award-winning author of "The Vagina Monologues," which has been published in 45 languages and performed in more than 130 countries. She is also the founder of V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls, which has raised $70 million and educated millions through art and activism; and, Mae Jemison, who launched into orbit aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in 1992 as the world's first woman of color to go to space. She is the founder and president of two technology companies. Ms. Jemison also founded and chairs The Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence, which hosts an annual international science camp.
