Special 9/11 Radio Smart Talk

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

witf presents a special edition of Radio Smart Talk Sunday at 3 p.m. to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.  This program will provide an opportunity for Central Pennsylvanians to engage and share their thoughts about that day and the 10 years that have followed.

We'll be taking your phone calls, emails, and comments on witf.org and witf's Facebook page.  Throughout much of the last week and a half, many of you have submitted answers to our 10 years, 10 days, 10 views on 9/11.  We'll read a few of your responses on Sunday's program.  Here's a sample of your thoughts:

"As we recall the events of 9/11 we must ask ourselves how do we demonstrate our respect for and carry out our responsibility to those who lost their lives that day. The answer lies in the actions of those who helped their brother in need, who risked and even laid down their lives for our fellow man."

"In some ways I do feel more patriotic, I suppose, in that I have become aware of how much I do love our freedom and our resources. However, I have developed a greater distrust of our national government and what I consider to be its propaganda aimed at building a blind loyalty."

"I think for many here in PA and across the nation, a big chunk of our innocence was lost on that horrible day...and we're still coming to terms with that, in big and small ways."

I was teaching when I heard about the attacks on September 11, 2001. I am trained as a child caregiver with Church of the Brethren Disaster Child Care. Two weeks later I went to New York City and helped take care of children in the child care center in the Disaster Recovery Center set up by Red Cross and FEMA. I was privileged to work with thousands of people who worked together to help the victims do what they needed to do to get help by providing care for children who needed care at that time, to put some love into helping to start the healing. I worked there for two weeks taking care of children.

I feel tremendous emotions on this very sad anniversary. I had worked in the World Trade Center a few years before the attacks and am sometimes haunted by memories of the very sweet people I did temp work for there. I also feel an occasional chill thinking how easilly I might have perished as well. But I do have a very special, very warm spot in my heart for how so many Americans and people from all over the world poured out their help and concern for victims and victims families.
But I feel equal concern and grief for the horrors suffered by innocent Arab families as a result of US policy and aggression both before and after that terrible day. From the 6 weeks of continuous bombing of Baghdad in 1991, followed by a decade of deadly sanctions against iraq, to the post-9/11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and regular drone strikes in Pakistan...as well as the physical, emotional and mental trauma experienced by American soldiers, families and friends.

It all seems about oil and gas. It is time for a very serious clean energy jobs program. Before climate change unraveles human civilization.

This blood lust for fossil fuel is killing us all. Coal, oil, gas and nukes have got to go. We need wind and solar energy now...to LIVE.

Hurricanes, floods, and fires may be our final warnings. Are we listening? Glaciers and aquifers are melting and drying up. Top soil is blowing away as deserts expand (pushing more carbon into the atmosphere). World population is approaching 7 billion and growing faster every day. One severe weather event could send the global food supply into a downward spiral... And carbon emmissions are still on the rise! This IS a 9 1 1 call:

W I N D & S O L A R JOBS NOW
before the economy & evironment crash down on us.
