witf presents a special edition of Radio Smart Talk Sunday at 3 p.m. to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. This program will provide an opportunity for Central Pennsylvanians to engage and share their thoughts about that day and the 10 years that have followed.
We'll be taking your phone calls, emails, and comments on witf.org and witf's Facebook page. Throughout much of the last week and a half, many of you have submitted answers to our 10 years, 10 days, 10 views on 9/11. We'll read a few of your responses on Sunday's program. Here's a sample of your thoughts:
"As we recall the events of 9/11 we must ask ourselves how do we demonstrate our respect for and carry out our responsibility to those who lost their lives that day. The answer lies in the actions of those who helped their brother in need, who risked and even laid down their lives for our fellow man."
"In some ways I do feel more patriotic, I suppose, in that I have become aware of how much I do love our freedom and our resources. However, I have developed a greater distrust of our national government and what I consider to be its propaganda aimed at building a blind loyalty."
"I think for many here in PA and across the nation, a big chunk of our innocence was lost on that horrible day...and we're still coming to terms with that, in big and small ways."

But I feel equal concern and grief for the horrors suffered by innocent Arab families as a result of US policy and aggression both before and after that terrible day. From the 6 weeks of continuous bombing of Baghdad in 1991, followed by a decade of deadly sanctions against iraq, to the post-9/11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and regular drone strikes in Pakistan...as well as the physical, emotional and mental trauma experienced by American soldiers, families and friends.
This blood lust for fossil fuel is killing us all. Coal, oil, gas and nukes have got to go. We need wind and solar energy now...to LIVE.
Hurricanes, floods, and fires may be our final warnings. Are we listening? Glaciers and aquifers are melting and drying up. Top soil is blowing away as deserts expand (pushing more carbon into the atmosphere). World population is approaching 7 billion and growing faster every day. One severe weather event could send the global food supply into a downward spiral... And carbon emmissions are still on the rise! This IS a 9 1 1 call:
