Roundtable on latest current events and issues

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Friday, March 25:

From the international military operation in Libya, to the earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear emergency in Japan, to Governor Corbett's proposed state budget, to the plight of NPR, the NCAA tournament, and the bizarre saga of Charlie Sheen (and the coverage of Charlie Sheen...and the coverage of the coverage of Charlie Sheen), a lot has happened in the news of recent weeks – some serious, and some, well, not so much.

We like to take the opportunity, from time to time, to review the news, and put it in its proper context. We'll do so with another Radio Smart Talk roundtable. We'll be joined by Gil Smart from the Lancaster Sunday News, and Dr. Matthew Woessner from Penn State Harrisburg.

We'll also welcome your comments, and we'll play another round of Good News, Bad News, No News.

Clearly, not much has happened lately...

so could you spend most of the show talking about Charlie Sheen...?

Better yet, could you analogize the rest of the world's events to Charlie Sheen-----using him as perfect synoptic example?

(this way we can concentrate solely on the overriding energetic pattern and ignore all the obfuscating peripheral minutiae)

Demonstrably: "when I think of Tomahawk missile air strikes against an authoritarian Libyan leader Muammar Gadhaffi in northern Africa it immediately reminds me of Charlie Sheen,"
and,
"Japan is on the verge of a modern day surrealistic nightmare reminiscent of a Breughel painting, one very much personified by Charlie Sheen."

OR,
perhaps you could just skip Charlie Sheen.... since I'm certain we all agree he is the lone constant in all the global and civil upheaval...?
No sense in mentioning the obvious, is it?

I like the way you think Robert. Reminds me of something Charlie Sheen once said...

Hello,

Japan is NOT the Western World. It was always my understanding that "western world" referred to the Western Hemisphere. Perhaps your guest meant to say the Industrialized World. Thank you.

Does the Cold War experience of backing bullys, Somoza, Pahlavi, Diem etc or failing to back popular leaders such as Ho trying to break from colonial histories, inform today's American laziness at caring to look under the hood before recomending remedies?
Note Bill Lederer's writings Vis a vis southeast Asia

Why are members of the media so quick to blame the media? I was dismayed by the panelists' pointed but totally unspecific complaints about reporting on Japan's nuclear crisis. I beg to differ. I have seen and heard some excellent, realistic, fact-based, not-overly-alarmist reporting on this issue on NPR, washingtonpost.com, nytimes.com, wire services in my local paper, and even the NBC evening news. The fact that people panic is human nature and shouldn't be blamed on media coverage, unless you can substantiate what media coverage you're talking about. Maybe because I don't watch the 24-hour TV news operations, my perspective is skewed by overly accurate, intelligent reporting! The panelists should have been asked to cite examples of coverage they felt was poor, not just to blame "the media" in general. This is a sloppy way of speaking that is all too common today.
