I used to live in North Halls (late 70's) and would jog by his house in the mornings. On 2 occasions I saw him walking to campus, and would say hello, and he waved and smiled. The second time I saw him we had won a big game that weekend, said "Great game" and he said thanks with a big smile. Will never forgot those brief encounters. God bless Joe and his family.

Every year me and my family would attend at least one game. Living out of state we would trek the 5 hours to Happy Valley to watch our beloved team. While watching our team, I would look down on the field and see this short man among the giants. But as I realized that this man was not small among giants, but that this man was a giant among men. He was and will always be a true legend. He gave more than any person and was humble about it. Everyone will truly miss him.

I was in the Blue Band in the 1970s. My first year, when I asked why we didn't practice our routines in Beaver Stadium, I was met with laughter. Joe's rule was that the band couldn't touch the stadium grass except for the actual football game performances and even then, not if the grass was wet.

When the band found out that we would be getting new uniforms, we all pressed for getting a lion logo added and updating the look. To our surprise, Joe had a say in the band uniform and nixed that idea.

His reputation for being concerned about students was real - when I passed JoePa on campus and greeted him, he took the time to greet me, too. I was impressed by the regular football team study sessions held in one of the branch libraries on campus, where a cadre of adults patroled the tables of football players.

He truly believed in developing the full potential of student athletes, preparing them for life and not just for the game.

Thanks for the great homages you have been paying to legendary Joe Paterno. I have postponed walking my dog this morning; your coverage just keeps coming! But I have to get him out for his hour trek.

I will miss this if you announce it during the next hour, so please continue to announce it over the next couple of days: When will the Memorial Service be for us fans to attend -- or will the board of trustees blow that, too? And officials realize, I hope, that the only appropriate venue large enough to hold it is Beaver Stadium.

Our then college-aged son was at the shore with some friends some years ago. They left their belongings on the sand, and went to swim in the water. Upon returning, they found that their things had been moved above the line of the encroaching water. An older gentleman yelled to them that he had moved their things to escape the tide - and, yes, it was Joe Paterno.

What a wonderful show. Thank you.
It's important that everyone know that Joe Paterno was a great man on and off the field; an example for all of us to "dare to be great".

The Board and all those who failed Joe have blood on their hands.
