Questions on pet care and health -- ask the Vet

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Wednesday, December 14:

The temperatures have dipped in the last week and cold weather will be with us for the next four months.  As pet owners, how does the cold affect our animals?  Do those sweaters for dogs or cats help to keep them warm?

Puppies or kittens may be on many young children's wish list this holiday season.  Is it a good idea to make a pet a gift?  Do the kids know the responsibilities that come with caring for a pet?

These are just a few of the questions we'll pose to Dr. Ben Zimmerman, a veterinarian at Companion Animal Hospital in Elizabethtown on Wednesday's Radio Smart Talk.

Discussion of pet care and health is always one of the most popular programs we have so be sure to call or email early for Wednesday's show.

What questions do you have for Dr. Zimmerman?  Ask them in the comments section below.

We have a cat who has recently become diabetic. During the initial diagnosis period she frequently urinated on carpeted areas.

With that in mind:
#1 - What tips can you offer for re-training litter-box use.

#2 - Are there any cat-treats which will not cause issues for a cat with diabetes?

We have a family of feral cats that live in our back yard. There are adult cats, and four about 4 week old kittens. Will the kittens be able to weather the cold as young as they are? Are there any precautions we can take ? Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks

I am a groomer, and have heard many complaints from my clients this past year that topical flea and tick preventatives are just not working as well as they used to. Can you give some insight on this - are the bugs becoming resistant? Thank you!

My labradoodle pulls on the leash when I walk her. We've been to obedience school, I've worked with her in training; I've gotten a harness as well as a haltie for her nose. None have helped. A friend recommended a shock collar. I've always thought they were cruel and inhumane. What are your thoughts on using a shock collar for training?

Great program.

My cat has a problem in getting "poop" to go through him well. He's on lactulose which seems to irritate his tummy--he often throws it up alng with food he's eaten. What's the best to do?

Thank you,

Morning Gentlemen,

I have a Pekinese- Pug that has a foul odor that returns a few days after having been bathed.

Is this inherent in the breed?

Also if you please; is it a good idea to add olive oil to the dog food in order to help keep the skin from drying out?

Steve.

We love our big dog, she eats poop (her own, and other dogs). This makes her sick.

We try to keep her away from it, but it doesn't always work.

Worse, we have a new, small dog, and we don't want her to teach him this gross habit.

Do you have any suggestions to stop her from doing it, and to stop her from teaching it to our new dog?

Jim

My cat is a constant licker and biter.

Normally, it's no big deal, but lately, he's been biting harder and clamping on for a while.

I know it is a sign he was weaned too early, and I don't want to discipline him too much, because he's doing it from affection, but it hurts! What can I do?

Molly

What suggestions do you recommend for stopping a cat from scratching?

We tried the spray bottle with water then with a little bit of vinegar, scratching pads, chasing her, swatting at the air, but she is defiant.

If we use double sided tape, we’d have to put it on ever piece of fabric in the house because she’ll find something.

Thank you.

Jewell

Do you recommend pet insurance under any circumstances?

I have a 6-mo-old Pomeranian/poodle mix.

From your experience, do you recommend any particular insurance company or type of insurance?

Tom

We've been attempting to give one of our cats an allergy pill for the past couple weeks.

It takes two of us and sometimes it goes very well, other times not so much and everyone gets stressed out…cat and humans.

There's got to be a better way.

Is there medicine that is flavored for cats or liquid versions…. ANY alternative to pills???

Thanks!

We are interested to know the vet's opinions about the use of Pet Massage therapy, Acupuncture, and Chinese herbs to support pet health and manage disease.

A friend had two dogs with Cancer, one w/ lung and one w/bone. The vet gave a poor prognosis for each dog, for the one with bone cancer, the vet gave a guess of two to four months. A pain medication was started and within three days the dog started to vomit, had loose stools with some blood and mucus; and, did not want to eat. The dog was then treated by the Acupuncturist with herbs, and massage therapy for the areas and limbs not affected by the cancer. The dog lived for six months, her quality of life seemed pretty good until the last two
weeks. My friend did put her dog down b/c of the disease advancing and increasing pain.

What are your thoughts about this?

Thank you.

Someone told me that drinking the Christmas tree water is bad for cats. We have 5 cats and they and every cat I've owned drinks it. Should I worry?
