Pulitzer-Prize winner Thomas Hylton returns to Radio Smart Talk

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Tuesday, November 15:

Two months ago, Pulitzer prize winning author Thomas Hylton appeared on Radio Smart Talk to discuss smart growth.  It was a popular program that resulted in dozens of phone calls, emails and comments -- so many in fact that we didn't get to respond to most of them.  At the time, we promised to bring Mr. Hylton back on the program to discuss his vision of "smart growth" and that's what he'll do on Tuesday's show.

Hylton believes walkable communities with homes on smaller lots with many trees that are located near stores and schools is the key to sustainable growth.

Several listeners agreed but others expressed a different point-of-view and called Hylton's ideas unrealistic.

We'll ask the question again -- what is the key to sustainable growth in our communities?

The government should turn as many forclosure homes into bare lots for the neighbors to be able to use for gardens. That will increase the other properties values and the banks will be more secured and so will the people.

Hiking and biking trails are nice, but bicycles can and should be considered for more than recreation--more than a trail experience. Speaking as a avid bicyclist, it's difficult to separate the recreational aspect from the practical every time you climb onto a bike--they're fun. Trail development is well and good, but what is needed is how towns and cities in our area could better incorporate bike travel. NYC is making this positive step with their own infrastructure, and it would be wise if we in Central PA would follow suit. Given steadily increasing population worldwide, in the future it may be a matter of necessity rather than choice. People are in competition with resources for land use, so we'll need to think more practically about how we live, as Mr. Hylton proposes with localized efficiency, and how we travel. Bike travel in towns makes good sense, so it would be nice to see our towns embracing and developing safe bike lanes. Hopefully, sooner rather than later.
