Postal Service's financial woes; Adam Taliaferro

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Friday, September 30:

The U.S. Postal Service lost $8.5 billion last year.  The Postal Service's financial situation is so grim that significant changes are being considered, including the layoff of postal workers, closing post offices around the country and eliminating delivery of mail on Saturdays.

There's no doubt the internet, email, text messaging and other social medias have become the communication tools of choice for the masses.  It has been years since some people have written a letter or even paid a bill through the mail.  It's a much different world than just 15 years ago and the Postal Service is feeling the effects.

On Friday's Radio Smart Talk, we'll focus on the Postal Service's financial challenges and if it can be saved.

Also, former Penn State football player Adam Taliaferro, who was paralyzed in a 2000 game but recovered against steep odds, will join us to tell his inspiring story.  Taliaferro will be speaking at Pullo Center on the campus of Penn State York on Wednesday, October 12 at 7 p.m.  witf's Tim Lambert will serve as moderator.

The US Postal service is the 2nd biggest employer in the US. No other business would ever have to PRE fund their pensions w/in 10 yrs for 75. This is an attack on the middle class. It would bankrupt many small businesses who are out of the way. This is another attack on unions and the middle class

I've turned to paying my bills online because postage keeps going up. If the cost to ship didn't keep increasing, I would use the postal system more.

Did you pay for your computer? Do you pay for internet service each month? Do you pay for the electricity to run it? How can you complain about a 44 cent stamp that will send a letter from Maine to Hawaii?

Please contact your state reps and have them support H.R. 1351 and oppose H.R. 2309 which will be the Wisconsin of the Postal Service.

Why don't they drop Saturday deliveries and deliver mail Monday, Wedensday and Friday, that way they could get rid of the part-timers and deliver more mail in less time.

Two questions

The last time I was in Britain I noticed that the Post Offices there offer banking services and I believe insurance also. Is the USPS looking at this?

As a long distance hiker, I am aware that many hikers depend on smaller post officers near trail heads to recive supplies. Examples are post offices near the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, and some in California, Oregon and Washington along the Pacific Crest Trail. Is the USPS looking at ways to serve hikers on these trails if some smaller post offices close?

Dear Scott,

I wish your panel had included someone representing the postal workers, but in their absence please take a look at these press materials:

Thank you for today's program.

1.  Publish postal workers' salary and benefits numbers so the public can determine if the compensation is appropriate for the service they provide.

2.  In areas of high population concentration, establish neighborhood  kiosks  to which mail is delivered (akin to mailbox pods at apartment and townhouse complexes). Provide delivery and pickup only to the doors of those who are physically incapable of getting out and have no one in the household who can aid them.

3.  Smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles for mail carriers. Explore electric.
