Poll on economy and gas drilling -- your thoughts?

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Monday, October 17:

A new poll conducted by Mercyhurst College in Erie finds the majority of Pennsylvanians believe the nation's economy si poor and more than one in five says they are falling behind.

A separate poll indicates Pennsylvania residents favor hydraulic fracking to remove natural gas from the state's Marcellus Shale, but most don't support drilling in state forests and even more oppose fracking in state parks.

The Mercyhurst Poll was conducted by the Mercyhurst Center for Applied Politics.  Dr. Joseph Morris, the poll's director will join us on Monday's Radio Smart Talk.

During the program, we'd like to hear your answers to several of the poll questions.

Thinking about job opportunities where you live, would you say there are plenty of jobs available in your community, jobs are somewhat difficult to find in your community, or that jobs are very difficult to find in your community?

Which best describes your family's financial situation?

Do you feel as if you are getting ahead financially, have just enough money to maintain your standard of living, or are you falling behind financially?

Do you favor or oppose extracting natural gas through fracking in Pennsylvania's Marcellus shale region?

Do you think Pennsylvania should or should not tax gas extracted from the Marcellus Shale?

The jobs created are temporary. Even the most recent Ecology & Environment 'speculative' study conceded that transients would do the work until year 11. However, if you took a look at the Labor board actuals, Woming, Louisianna, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah, increased Natural Resource & Mining industry jobs by 50k but lost those 50k jobs all within 10 years. Take a good look where you want to be in 10 years. Empty hotels, no more jobs then what you started with, and toxic environment. Doesn't sound like a win-win situation to me.

Will Professor Morris please explain how the polls were conducted: by mail, by phone, what time the calls were made (if by phone), what was the percentage of response, what was the geographic distribution, etc.--essentially please explain the research methods. Did the poll explain what hydraulic fracking is? How valid are the data by statistical methods? To be honest, I'm writing because I have a hard time believing the majority of Pennsylvanians would agree with hydraulic fracking if they understood the damage that it does. Thank you.

We have plenty of call center jobs in central PA but folks think that is beneath them. At our company we have a high turnover in those jobs. What more can we do if people are lazy? Jobs are hard to come by. Thanks.
