Photography 101

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Tuesday, August 9:

One of most significant technological changes the world has seen over the past decade is in photography.  The popularity of digital cameras has given even the most amateur photographers the ability to take beautiful pictures.

However, many of us still just point and shoot without knowing what we're doing or understanding all the features our digital cameras have available.

On Tuesday's Radio Smart Talk, we'll present kind of a Photography 101 session with Roger Baumgarten of Roger That Photography.  Roger will answer your questions about composing better photographs that you and your family can enjoy for years to come.

What questions about photography do you have?

Do you have any tips or tricks for manual focusing?

@Brett: Key is to be sure to keep the focus on your subject, particularly if the subject is in motion. In terms of technique, I always support the lens with my left hand underneath, which provides the most stability while allowing operation of the focus and/or zoom ring.

I have a Canon 10D. How do you increase the picture resolution on this camera?

@Jeff: Go to the Menu, then Quality setting (see p. 46 of 10D user manual). Select Large/Fine, and leave it there. When memory cards were expensive, "downgrading" this setting made sense if you had a low-capacity card in the camera (256MB or so, for example). With memory cards running about $15-$30 for 8GB today, cost of storage is a non-issue. So keep it Large/Fine, and you'll get the best JPG quality in every shot.
