Philanthropy's role in the community

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Tuesday, May 17:

Lancaster County native Brad Rutter recently competed on the game show Jeopardy with another contestant and an IBM computer.  Rutter, who is one of Jeopardy's all-time champions, donated half of his winnings from the show -- $100,000 -- to the Lancaster County Community Foundation.  The Community Foundation is a philanthropic organization that pools charitable donations and makes grants, depending on community needs.

Philanthropy is defined as altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement, usually manifested by donations of money, property, or work to needy persons or community institutions.

With national, state, and local governments trying to find ways to close budget deficits, philanthropy could take on an even bigger role.  What is that role?  That's the focus of Tuesday's program.

Your guests have used the phrase "in perpetuity" re philanthropic bequests. Could they please discuss the impact of the court cases re bequests at the Barnes Museum in Philly and the Foreign Service School at Princeton in terms of the donors' intent and "in perpetuity". Dave in Carlisle

I'm so glad I was able to listen to the 7pm re-broadcast. We need more people to be aware of the vital work of LCCF. We can do more good work if we put all the $20- bills together in a planned way. Thanks for having Mr. Bressi & Mr. Atwater on...and kudos to Brad Rutter, his Uncle Peter would be pleased.

This is a late comment. But we should allrecall that the Geisinger Trust was broken by Pennsylvania court to accommodate the wishes of Penn State Univ to merge Geisinger with the M.S. Hershey Medical Center. The merger (takeover) lasted two years. The two entities parted ways. What I would like to know is the current (5/2011) status of the Geisinger Trust. My blood ran cold when I learned back in the day that the private trust that created the excellent Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA was broken. May we conclude therefore that "in perpetuity really has no meaning"?
