Pennsylvania wine industry growing

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Friday, October 14:

Saturday is Pennsylvania Wine Day.  It's a day designated to bring attention to Pennsylvania's growing wine industry.  The state is home to more than 140 wineries and may possibly produce more kinds of wine than any other region in the country.

Wine tasting tours have become popular tourist attractions or hobby for many Pennsylvanians and visitors.

On Friday's Radio Smart Talk, we'll focus on the Pennsylvania wine industry -- why its booming, what wine aficionados can find, and offer a few tips so you can enjoy Pennsylvania wines even more.

Joining us are Jennifer Eckinger, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Winery Association and Sam Landis, owner of
Vynecrest Vineyards & Winery, located in the Lehigh Valley.

This was a suggestion I made to the then Secretary of Agriculture and the Pa Department of Tourism (under DCED) - create a partnership where AG, Dept of Tourism and the Wine Assn. launches a "ag-tourism" movement, cross promoting PA wine, local B and B's and restaurants featuring PA wine. It's a win win for all involved - promotes agriculture, tourism and the local businesses get a boost as well. We have a lot to offer re: PA wines - there's a taste for everyone. Other states, like Virginia, do this. Why not PA ?

Congratulations to the Pennsylvania Winery Association for promoting and encouraging such a "growing", vibrant Pennsylvania industry. Kudos to Sam Landis, the President of the PWA, for his great leadership!

Does the wine association support privatizing state stores?

Are there organic wineries in the commonwealth? Elsewhere? Hope so!

some do, I believe, but since each winery is a bit different in what they offer, you'd have to check around with the particular winery. I do know that the PLCB, especially in their larger stores, does off organic wines

I’m enjoying the discussion very much. I was hoping the organizers might call in, but York, PA is having a PA wine event next Saturday and Sunday at Sovereign Bank Stadium. Called Yorktoberfest, it will feature wines from a dozen PA wineries. More info at www.yorktoberfest.com.
