Paula Poundstone; WITF spelling bee

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk
Go to her stand-up shows, and you'll find an almost cult-like devotion to her. Fans love her matter-of-fact delivery, her spontaneity on stage (she will sometimes improvise whole sections of her act), her utter lack of "blue" material, and her genuinely funny observations about everyday life, from the personality traits of cats to the insidious nature of Pop-Tart packaging.

Poundstone released her first comedy CD last year, entitled "I Heart Jokes." She's a regular guest on A Prairie Home Companion, often appearing on the program's annual joke shows. And she's headed to Central PA for a concert at the Strand-Capitol in York on Friday, March 12th. We'll talk with her about balancing home life and the strange world of stand-up comedy, about her popularity on Wait, Wait…and just how and when public radio actually started to become funny.

Then, we'll present the Radio Smart Talk spelling bee! WITF is the proud media sponsor for the 2010 Central PA Spelling Bee. 30 finalists will compete in the Grand Championship on WITF-TV this Sunday at 5:30pm. In advance, as a celebration of the area's finest middle school spellers, we thought we'd see how some of your favorite WITF personalities' spelling skills have held up through the years. We'll give them the opportunity to spell the same sorts of words presented at the annual Scripps Howard national bee…and then we'll offer that same chance to you, with the opportunity to win some fabulous prizes!
