PA Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley reflects on administration's first year

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Wednesday December 21:

Throughout Pennsylvania's history, the state's lieutenant governors have had varying degrees of responsibilities and power.  Largely left to the descretion of the governor, the office of lieutenant governor would sometimes be a ceremonial position representing the administration at funerals or other public events.  However, a few Pennsylvania lieutenant governors were given duties that had an impact on the people of the Commonwealth and were considered key members of the governor's team.

Pennsylvania's current Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley appears to be in the latter category and an important part of the Corbett Administration.

Lieutenant Governor Cawley will appear on Wednesday's Radio Smart Talk to discuss the administration's first 11 months in office.

Among the issues on the program agenda will be Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling, transportation funding, education reform, including school vouchers, and privatization of the state's liquor stores.

Do you have a question or comment for Lt. Gov. Cawley and the Corbett Administration?  Write to us below.

Pennsylvania's unemployment rate has remained below the national average. How would you categorize the Marcellus Shale industry's effect on job creation?

Big question, Where's the sweeping reform that Corbett was going to send to the hill?

Martha, considering they're building hotels to house the workers, I'd say it's done a lot for out of state workers. It's probably created some low income jobs for PA residents.

President Obama has spent us into oblivion - we're $15 trillion in debt. What types of steps are you taking to ensure that Pennsylvania doesn't fall into the same fiscal disarray?

So, none of that debt existed before Obama?

There's a lot of push to privatize the LCB. Has there been a study done to estimate the cost to taxpayers to shutter the stores and switch from selling to over seeing.

I believe most stores are leased, so what is the cost of ending those leases, along with liquidating the inventory.

How much will privatization cost the taxpayer?

what accomplishment is the administration most proud of over the past year and what didn’t get accomplished this year that will be a top priority for next year?”

Let oil drillers move to Ohio if they are afraid of our oversight! It probably means that they are companies who are not interested in complying in environmental regs and protecting Pennsylvanians. I personally have been hounded by landmen to lease my property, not one of whom was a Pennsylvanian. One considered himself a Pennsylvanian -- he's lived here 18 months. The best paying jobs are going to out-of-staters. We need to have an extraction tax. As long as we have oil in the ground, the oil companies aren't going anywhere!

Since one party currently controls the government in PA.. How soon can we expect the term limit legislation that people have been asking for?

And how soon can we expect an alternative to property taxes for funding education?

Just answer the question...People want legislation...the Republican party currently has the ability to do this.

Where is the legislation?

Careful what you state, Lt. Gov.! The people are in control? OK, so listen to the polls that say that the vast majority of Pennsylvanians want an impact tax. Maybe it will be time for you to go next election!

Yes, you are attempting to blame teachers.

How about answering the part about the legislation taking colas...enough with blaming teachers.

Isn't saying "we are not taking a COLA" putting a spin on the truth in that --
the money still comes from the taxpayer even though it may be donated to some charity and the COLA still adds to future pension costs the taxpayers will have to meet. Why doesn't the legislature rescind the automatic COLAs?

What I find most unreasonable in the Lt Governor's constant reiteration of "...needing to make PA more environmentally friendly for jobs, for revenue, for the overall good of Pennsylvanians" is the failure to understand that destruction of human habitat, of human community and of the quality of the character of those communities CANNOT be sacrificed in the name of industrial development-------yet that is precisely what he, and the Republican-led legislature are doing over the objections of all who do not agree with that agenda.

I have driven through the Marcellus drilling areas. My heart broke to see how industrialized those small towns were becoming.....how savaged they were by the countryside factory of gas extraction.
Building for PA's future OUGHT NOT involve destroying what has taken centuries to organically socially create-----yet the almighty dollar doesn't believe in anything but profit, no matter the cost of that profit.
