New Harrisburg Area Community College president looks into the future

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Friday, July 15:

Since being established in 1964, Harrisburg Area Community College has been one of this region's most active and community-involved institutions.  There are more than 23 thousand students enrolled in classes on five different campuses known today as HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College.

Community colleges themselves have undergone a transformation over the past decade.  The nation's last two presidents -- George W. Bush and Barack Obama -- have lauded community colleges as gateways to higher education and ground zero for workers seeking job training or re-training.

On Friday's Radio Smart Talk, we'll meet Dr. John J. Sygielski, the new president of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College to get his views on his HACC's role in the region, higher education, particularly community colleges, and the economy.

I attended Broome Community College in upstate New York for three years. During my studies I encountered a group of students in country primarily from South America and a few South Atlantic island nations. These students were afforded amenities that accompanied their degrees that were not offered to American students such as paid internships that follow graduation and invitations to trade shows and technical presentations. I do not know what spurs this inequity in education but I found it to be unnerving at the least.

At the Gettysburg campus, I understand that many of the enrichment programs programs for the community will be eliminated. These are programs such as local history and non-credit. Is that true, and if so, why the change? These programs have been one of the joys of HACC in the region.

I appreciate that Ski's only been on the job four days and he's making appearances already in the community. I look forward to hearing from him in 4 - 6 months when he's had a chance to understand the college and community better. His answers about online learning and the artistic class were on target. I also appreciated his appreciation for the liberal arts and the vocational programs. I was impressed that he was a man of his word - I emailed him a question and he responded with an informed answer within an hour. This may be a government official who really does what he says he will do.

I worked with Dr. Ski for the 5 years he was at Lord Fairfax Community College in Virginia. Ski is a man of his word and his philosophy is "what the students needs, we will provide". Ski is involved in the community and is missed in Virginia.
