Radio Smart Talk for Thursday, February 3: In the early 20th century, Francisco Madero led an uprising in Mexico that turned into a complex civil war. It was a revolution that established what would become the PRI, Mexico’s ruling party for more than 70 years.
Now, in the early 21st century, with new leadership at Mexico’s helm, and drug wars ravaging the country, might Mexico be primed for another revolution? Is that what it will take to raise up a nation beset by poverty and crime?
We’ll talk with Dr. James Cockcroft, author of Mexico’s Revolution Then And Now about whether a glimpse at Mexico’s past may hold the key to its possible future. (Dr. Cockcroft will appear at the Midtown Scholar Bookstore Saturday at 4pm).
Then…with Super Bowl Sunday upon us, we thought it might be appropriate to take a few minutes to do something nobody else will this weekend – consider what’s out there for people who are not football fans, and who have not been invited to a Super Bowl party. What if you don’t want to watch 15 pre-game shows in a row? Where can you turn? WITF-TV will devote Super Bowl Sunday to presenting concerts and programs that offer an alternative. Mitzi Trostle will fill us in.
