Here's what Deneen wrote:
"Well, we have found Wisler's birth family in Haiti. They are alive. Mesi is good. Their house fell down. Wisler's grandfather passed away but we don't know if it was the result of the earthquake. He had been near death for many years. Wisler's birth mom is pregnant again. We even got a cell phone number for Wisler's birth family. I called them just to hear their voice ... They sounded good even though we were NOT able to communicate.
"I am planning to travel to Haiti to visit them and give them some supplies, food, meds, some money and a tent. I am trying to work out the details. The really neat part about this is how we found them. A mom who adopted one of Wisler's friends from the BRESMA orphanage suggested I contact this missionary from Canada who was on the ground in Haiti. I contacted him (Frank) via Facebook and found out we were born on the same day (but not the same year). He and his wife adopted a young girl from our orphanage. Anyway, he has his "men" working the streets to find Wisler's family. After more than a week the missionaries decided to ask the radio station to make an announcement. I have seen this work before... Anyway, "radio 32" (word of mouth - because you have 32 teeth in your mouth) went to work too and after another week Wisler's family contacted our friend.
"As you can imagine Wisler and I both overjoyed with the news. We are singing and dancing..." Deneen and Wisler organized a roller-skating fundraiser for the orphanage that so far has netted $22,000. "The money is still rolling in," Deneen cheerfully noted. And she would like to adopt Mesi if his birth mother is willing to relinquish her parental rights. She promises to keep us posted on developments in Haiti as she learns more.
