Radio Smart Talk for Thursday, March 10th:
March 10th is World Kidney Day, a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations, which hope to raise awareness about the importance of our kidneys to our overall health.
On Thursday’s Radio Smart Talk, we’ll find out about that importance and what you need to know to try to maintain good kidney health. We’ll also discuss kidney disease and associated health problems, with the Executive Director of the Kidney Foundation of Central PA, plus a doctor from Hershey Medical Center’s Division of Nephrology, and a nurse and former chronic kidney disease patient who has received two kidney transplants.
As always, your questions and comments will be welcome.

comments
severe, irreversible heart disease,
chronic or untreated infection, active mental illness (concerns about giving informed consent, being complaint in taking needed medications and keeping required follow-up appointments), active drug abuse, inability to function independently (concerns about compliance with medications and required follow-up)
repeated non-compliance with prescribed medications and treatments such as dialysis. There are exceptions to some of these. It is up to the medical team to determine the suitability of a candidate to receive a kidney transplant.
As I mentioned on the program, I have polycystic kidney disease. I was always given the advice that Dr. Ghahramani stressed today--in moderation, alcohol does not have any more of an adverse effect for people with PKD than for the general population.
Thank you for tuning in to hear what we had to say.
If your friend is a moderate drinker, I would not worry.
Robin, exclusions are pretty much based on the transplant candidate's health, the candidate's lifestyle, namely chronic alcoholism and drug use.
I would argue the nonavailability of donor organs is an exclusion for those who have died on the waiting list.
Robin, tea is a diuretic and in excess can actually be harmful. May I suggest carbon filtration or even my personal favourite, a home water distiller. I think kenmore made mine.
