In a relatively recent discovery, it was found that natural gas could be extracted from beneath the black shale known as Marcellus that runs throughout many areas of Pennsylvania. Land has already been leased and drilling has begun. In his budget proposal, Governor Ed Rendell is counting on tax money derived from the drilling to add to the state's coffers. However, there are environmental issues -- the process utilizes a lot of water and some are concerned that
waterways near drilling sites could become polluted.
