Christopher Stone first explored this concept in his 1972 essay Should Trees Have Standing? Citation of his ideas in a subsequent Supreme Court opinion pushed Stone’s ideas into the public eye, and served as a rallying cry for some in the burgeoning environmental movement. We’ll talk with Stone about the impetus for the idea, and its relevance today amid oil spills and other environmental challenges of the 21st century.
