Holiday etiquette

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Tuesday, December 6:

You've gotten a new job and will be attending your first office holiday party -- how do you dress?  Should you drink alcohol at the party?  And another thing -- do you send a greeting card to the new boss or will that put pressure on the boss to send one to you?

People probably socialize and interract more during the holiday season than at any other time of year.  Which means a few special etiquette questions may arise.

On Tuesday's Radio Smart Talk, Sheryl Trower, the president and founder of the Etiquette School of Central Pennsylvania will join us to answer your questions about the do's and don't's of the holiday season.

Whether you're curious about gift-giving, holiday parties, how to graciously accept an unwanted present or any other etiquette topic, call in to the prgram or ask your question in the comments section below.

Chocolate and candies would NOT be welcome gifts for people who are REALLY working hard at losing weight or have some other specific diet. A much better gift would be some kind of treat that you know is within their specific dietary guidelines or a non-food item.

Robin, you are absolutely correct, assuming the giver knows something about the recipient. I suggest chocolates, stationery, candles when you don`t know the person well or are surprised by a gift when you didn`t have one picked out just for them. Of course, the better we know the recipient the more thought you would put into the gift.

My pet peeve is that all my relatives expect me to tell them what to get our children for Christmas. I find that I end up giving them all my well-thought out and best ideas. Why can't people put some thought into the individual and what they would like rather than treat gift-giving as something that is just a chore?

Lisa, unfortunately some people do feel that gift giving is a chore. If we all felt that it is better to give than receive, the holidays would be much merrier.

Great show today. The Gold Chargers you talked about for the Holiday Table setting can be found at leading Party Rental Stores.
