Heart attack prevention and cardiac care

Written by  Megan Lello, witf Reporter and Producer

Radio Smart Talk for Monday, August 29:

A recent report from the American Heart Association shows that approximately every 25 seconds, an American will experience a heart attack. Every minute, someone will die of one. Fifty percent of men and 64 percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no symptoms of the disease. The American Medical Association suggests unblocking a heart attack within 90 minutes of its occurrence to ensure survival and minimize permanent damage.

On Monday's Radio Smart Talk, PinnacleHealth cardiologists will join us to talk about heart attack prevention and the latest treatments for cardiovascular diseases.

The emphasis on the physiological may in fact deter, as a smokescreen, the deeper and more significant conversation we need to be sharing about heart health: the emotional ties, and severances, that underpin our heart energetic functioning.

The correlation between atherosclerosis and stress has been proven.....equally important is the protection against such stress afforded by a deep sense of caring, being loved, being in love, love itself.
Callousness/hardening the heart against being hurt directly reflects in coronary compromise. Being injured at the heart level by rejection of one's love, being or feeling unloved, losing love----can manifest in disease symptom formation.

I hope the guest(s) include this in their discussion.

I've heard a heart attack feels like a crushing sensation on your chest. Like a Sumo wrestler is sitting in you. Is that an accurate description?

I am so glad to hear a respected Cardiologist clearly state that coronary artery blockage below 80% does NOT require surgical intervention. I feel many people have undergone unnecessary surgery for much less blockage.

My husband had neck ache and was sweating. He called to tell me he was leaving work to go home. When he described his symptoms, I thought it might be a heart attack and told him to take an aspirin and go to the Harrisburg Hospital emergency room, where I met him. Unfortunately, since he did not come in on an ambulance, he had to wait 3 hours before he received any medical attention. It turns out it was a minor heart attack and he got a stent the next day.

Great show! Very informative and timely, in light of the aging "boomer" population.
