Healthy eating habits and lifestyles in 2012

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Thursday, January 5:

Are you one of the millions of people who set a New Year's resolution to lose weight this year?  Less than a week into the new year – have you broken your resolution yet?  Losing weight and eating healthy take more than just saying you'll watch what you eat.

For most people, it takes planning your meals and snacks, not succumbing to the latest fad diet, and knowing the facts about what you're putting into your body.

On Thursday's Radio Smart Talk, we'll discuss living a healthy lifestyle, with an emphasis on food, with Jacqui Zimmerman, a registered dietician at Lancaster General Health.  Ms. Zimmerman teaches LGH's LEARN (lifestyle, exercise, attitude, relationships and nutrition) weight management program, so she'll have a ton of useful information on how slim down and get healthier.

Please ask the guest to comment on "Health At Every Size," the belief that "slim" and "health" are not exclusive. Also, please ask her to explain why 95% of diets fail, why the diet industry brings in over $6 billion a year with little to show for it, and why it is OK to bully children into dieting with anti-obesity hate speech. Additionally, ask your guest if she's familiar with the Ellyn Satter Institute and Satter's promotion of healthy relationships with food. If she's not familiar, she should look into it.

(When will you do a segment on how to gain weight healthily? That's a segment of the population that's overlooked in today's "fat is evil" mania.)

My 10-yr low-fat vegetarian diet rendered me infertile. In 2005, I discovered the Weston A Price Foundation and filled my frig with food from local farms including pastured meats and full-fat dairy products. This food is nutrient-dense and very satisfying. I soon became pregnant with my now four-year old son. Today, my family continues to eat Real Food, including full-fat, unprocessed dairy products, and pastured meats. We are all fit, healthy, and very, very active.

Processed "food" is depleted of the natural nutrients our bodies need and leaves the eater dissatisfied, which encourages overeating. Whole milk products do not add pounds. Additives in processed food such as sugars and corn syrups, inactivity, processed carbohydrates, and over-eating do. Read ingredients! Better - purchase food with only one ingredient – itself. Get to know your local farmer!
