Radio Smart Talk for Thursday, March 24:
Federally qualified health centers, or FQHCs, are non-profit, community-based health organizations. Originally, they were designed to provide health services to medically underserved populations in order to reduce the patient load on hospital emergency rooms.
But today many health clinics provide comprehensive health services, and not just to the medically underserved, but also underinsured and uninsured patients. Some are FQHCs, and charge on sliding scales, while some are not, and provide free care.
But what services should these clinics and health centers offer? How should they be funded? Who should they serve?
We'll learn more about health clinics from Jeannine Peterson, CEO of the Hamilton Health Center in Harrisburg, and Gale Thomason, Executive Director of Water Street Health Services, which provides Christian health services in Lancaster.
