Going green has always been a priority for us since we had my son who will be 3 yrs old in July. Just to mention some of the things we have changed include replacing all of our chemical cleaning products with vineager, using only cold water when we wash our clothes, buying biodegradable detergents, buying organic and/or local produce, replacing all of our light bulbs, refrigerator, and washing machine with energy star items. And I continue to look for other things in our daily lives that we can afford to change at the moment. In order for someone to live a more greener life style, they need to first educate themselves about what changes they can make safely and affordably.

One of the best ways to live greener is to get outside and experience Penns Woods. This an excellent time to start. May 27 to June 5 is Hiking Week in PA. Saturday, June 4 is National Trails Day. Go to the website www.explorepatrails.com for a huge number of opportunities to experience the outdoors during Hiking Week.

How elegant and technologically simple would it be to have a solar powered attic or whole house fan - I mean the intensity of the solar energy would correspond to the level of mechanical energy to needed to turn the fan, no? And I've got to think this could be made affordable enough to be in any house.

Look at a 19th century farmhouse..evergreens' foliage sheild the north and west in the winter, broadleaf trees canopy the house on the solar intense summer south aspect of te house yet drop their canopy allowing what solar energy is available to enter the house in the winter.

Ceiling fans are good but they spread dust increasing vacuuming electrial costs.

I grow organically and to save water it is always advised to much. However, much is filled with chemicals, dies and other non-organic items that I do not want in my food. Any suggestions on how to mulch safely?

I have a reel mower and I love it! Not only am I not using gas, but I'm burning calories and losing weight. Plus, I have 3 kids, 5, 3, and 2, and now they can play outside while I mow. I can see them, hear them, stop (and start) as needed to push a swing, or move a toy.

I keeep my AC and heat turned up and down and dress appropriately for the season. I don't over wash clothing. I use the appropriate amount of water for the washer load. I also use refillable drinking water bottles instead of using bottled spring water. We use a water cooler instead of buying bottles of water.
Isn't it hard on your electric bill to turn the AC on and off in the evening? The electric companies tell you to keep it on consistently.
