Getting ready for kindergarten and the importance of early learning

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Wednesday, August 10:

One of the biggest steps we took in our lives (and especially in our parents' lives) is when we started kindergarten.  For many of us, the first day of kindergarten was the first time we ventured into the world of formal education.  It wasn't all play time either -- we learned the basics of reading, writing, arithmetic, and social studies.  Kindergarten was the first time most of us were around so many other kids so we developed socialization skills as well.

Recent studies have shown just how important kindergarten is in the educational process.

Children making the transition from stay-at-home or pre-school to kindergarten face all kinds of unknowns and fears.

That's why Saturday, August 13 is a big day for witf and children in the region about to start kindergarten.  witf will be holding its very first Ready Set Go...kindergarten event at the Public Media Center from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.  The event is designed to help get five and six-year-olds ready for the first day of kindergarten later this month.

Wednesday's Radio Smart Talk will feature a discussion of the importance of kindergarten and early childhood learning and provide some tips for getting the kids ready to succeed in school.

Share stories about you or your children's first kindergarten experiences.

In answer to the usefulness of 12th grade: I graduated in 1979 and 12th grade was one of the richest year of high school. I had several classes that eventually became advanced placement. They gave me a definite edge going into college despite not offering actual college credit at the time. I had wonderful teachers and on getting to college, realized how blessed I had been to have attended Central York Senior High School.

I watched my oldest transform into a mature and disciplined young woman after 2 years of college. I personally believe education is not just about grades and test scores, but also demanding and teaching self-discipline and in turn good life skills that a young person may carry with them the rest of their lives. If one knows how to find the answers to life's questions and has developed good study habits and learned perseverance, that is the key to success.
