Facing Cancer Together -- nurse navigators

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Wednesday, June 22:

During any medical procedure, you can come in contact with countless doctors and nurses, from general practitioners to surgeons to specialists and beyond.

When dealing with particularly challenging medical issues, like a cancer diagnosis and treatment, it can be hard to keep track of who and what is going on around you.

That's where a nurse navigator can provide help – a nurse navigator is a specialty trained registered nurse who can serve as a patient advocate, coordinate the patient's care, and educate the patient and her family.

As part of witf's Facing Cancer Together, our interactive multi-media effort to connect the stories and lives of people touched by cancer, we'll learn more about the role a nurse navigator plays when we talk with Sue Bowman from Wellspan Health.

Ask your oncologist to refer you to a navigator. If your facility has a cancer center which provides supportive services such as social work, dietitian, financial guidance, navigators may be available. Ask if there is a navigator who specializes in the kind of cancer you have for the most comprehensive help.

Patients and their families are all "amateurs" at this -

Following my Mother's minimal mastectomy/radiation treatment, she was prescribed tomoxiphin - six months later (while visiting in a third world country)she suffered an intestinal blood clot and resultant removal of gangrenous intestine and suffered associated heart failure.

She'd been robust before that time.

An advisor may have cautioned her that an ophthalmologica l exam would have indicated that she was among the minority who will develop blood clots from tomoxiphin.

When my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer the nurse navigator made sure we had all the information we wanted . The nurse navigator was able to take more time than the Doctor and explain the steps of treatment. It was initially all so overwhelming and the Nurse navigator provided knowledge, compassion and guidance.

Timothy:
Your story tells the story better than anything we could say on-the-air. Thank you for posting and I hope your wife is doing well.

Sue Bowman was my nurse navigator - and is STILL helping me navigate 3 1/2 years later. Thank you for having this program with Sue as her guidance was invaluable to me. She suggested surgeons (just as she described), helped me understand why it's important to tell my highschool & college aged boys about my cancer - and even suggested ways to tell them. She listened as I worried about being a recently divorced woman - then helped me heal that pain by realizing if I survived that pain, I can "do this". I attended a nutrition class she offers for survivors ... she has really done so much that helped me - and many others. Thanks, Sue!!

Becky:
You are the one who has done all the hard work. Our cancer center, fortunately, had the services you needed and your determination and willingness to look toward your long range goal made your recovery possible. Keep working towards that end and thank you for your kind words.
