Radio Smart Talk for Monday, June 20:
When unemployment rates are high, finding the right job can be a challenge. Competition is high, and the future can feel uncertain. Imagine how much more challenging it would be to search for a job while also living with a disability. You may feel your given impairment may limit your options – or, worse yet, that it may cause potential employers to be unwilling to hire you, even if you're qualified, and can do the job.
We'll learn about the employment challenges facing the disabled in the current job market, as we talk with Dennis Steiner, President and CEO of the Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired, and Tony Soto, a legally blind worker in SABVI's industrial division.
LISTEN TO PROGRAM:

comments
-system resistance to employment for its own special interests
-disinformation to families and employers about work incentives and the ADA, evoking fear instead of promise and new roles in attaining job outcomes
-what new ways are called for in supporting people with disability in an everyday life.
This edition, sadly, was essentially a gloss over, and sad commentary on WITF. The most glaring problem was having only one respresentative of the industry provide perspective.
The Association of the Blind director statements on numerous number of matters, from why people don't get jobs, to why businesses are not hiring, are typical of service industries.
We need more time to discuss and answers to tougher questions, like how how Federal contracts keep people from real jobs?
WITF....please start using people first language: people w/disabilities, for example. A news item tonight referred to a lawsuit won by "mentally disabled". If I interpreted the story correctly, it should be stated "people w/intellectual disabilities".
Thanks for considering this in future broadcasts.
