Elizabethtown College's new president talks higher education

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Friday, January 20:

On Friday's Radio Smart Talk, the new president of Elizabethtown College in Lancaster County, Dr. Carl J. Strikwerda, joins us to discuss his vision for the liberal arts school, the value of a college degree, the affordability of higher education, and how students are being prepared for the jobs of the future.

Dr. Strikwerda took leadership at Elizabethtown in August after seven years as the Dean of Arts and Sciences at William and Mary College in Virginia, where he oversaw a great expansion.
His teaching background is in modern European history and the history of globalization -- two topics that have great influence on the American economy today.
What questions do you have for Dr. Strikwerda?

What is Dr. Strikwerda's position on the role of foreign language proficiency in the acquisition of global perspectives? Despite lots of lip service about the need for Americans to know languages other than English, programs are being cut right and left, in public schools, at colleges and universities and even in the federal budget.

What programs does Elizabethtown College have for students who are experiencing challenges outside the classroom? How does Elizabethtown College create an environment for students to learn "soft skills" and life skills that enhance the college life experience?

Have you noticed a change in the level of preparation of incoming freshmen, given the emphasis on standardized testing in public education today?

As an alumna and also an employee of the college, I am proud to add my voice to Dr. Strickwerda's representation of the college. I felt a kinship with the college when I first visited as a high school senior and that relationship continues to drive my commitment to our students today. Students looking for a place to prepare for adult life, not only in their vocational pursuits but as Dr. Strikwerda said so eloquently, as citizens of the local and global world can find a good fit here at EC. The balance between liberal arts and professional studies here makes for well-rounded graduates who feel proud about their collaboration with our faculty and staff in their education for life. As Benjamin Franklin said "if a [man] empties [his] purse into [his] head, no one can take it from [him]."
