Agriculture in Pennsylvania live from the PA State Farm Show

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Wednesday, January 11:

Wednesday's Radio Smart Talk will be broadcast live from the Pennsylvania State Farm Show.  The state's Secretary of Agriculture George Greig will join us to discuss the challenges facing farmers and what consumers should know.

According to the Agriculture Department, Pennsylvania has cash receipts of $5.1 billion from production agriculture, 63,000 farm families and 7.7 million acres of farmland.   When other support industries are figured in, production agriculture and agribusiness contributes nearly $51 billion to the state's economy.

The Farm Show is billed as the nation's largest indoor agricultural exhibition.  It is the perfect location to learn more about farming.

If you're visiting the Farm Show, stop by and say hello (we'll be near the Maclay Street entrance with the Cat in the Hat) or tune in to find out more about Pennsylvania's agriculture industry.

What questions or comments do you have about agriculture in Pennsylvania?

I'm from Crawford County living in Central PA. I am happy to see our area represented by the PA Dept of Ag. Keep up the good work George!

Food for thought. As I listen to George Greig extol the virtues of technology in agriculture, I’m reminded of something which the majority of us find objectionable. First of all, robotics take away jobs. But, it also leads to inhumane treatment of livestock through factory farming, not to mention, the harmful antibiotics in our milk and meat. This ‘progress’ is justified by a phrase Greig used, “to feed the world.” Rather than teach the world to feed themselves, we Americans believe, at all costs, we are entitled to make obscene profits. I personally know one of these millionaire farmers, a nice person, but I don't feel profit justifies any detriment caused by exploitive technology.
