What to look for on Smart Talk Thursday, November 8, 2018:

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank provides meals to more than 50,000 people each week in its 27 county service area.

It's estimated that one in nine people are at risk for hunger and one in six children. At risk means they don't always have access to enough food for an active, healthy life.  A new study finds that 108,000 children are struggling with hunger in the Food Bank's area.

Of the individuals served by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, 29% are under the age of 18 and another 29% are over the age of 50.

Of the households served by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, 59% have medical bills to pay, 40% have had someone in the household with a paying job in the past month, and 99% have permanent housing.

Why are there so many people in Central Pennsylvania without enough food to eat?  Reasons go back to the Great Recession that began in 2007.  Eleven years later, many families haven't recovered.

WITF is partnering with Wegmans and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Thursday to raise money to provide meals for those in need.

Joining us on Smart Talk to discuss hunger are Jennifer Powell, Director of Development for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Bob Finn, the store manager at Wegmans in Mechanicsburg.
