Comic book super-hero characters are everywhere these days, appearing in a deluge of films and TV shows.

But some comic book writers and artists are working to explore the full potential of the form beyond the masked characters in tights.

Scott McCloud has been described as" an evangelist for comics as a valid literary form."  He is an artist and writer best known for graphic studies on the medium such as his work, Understanding Comics.

Scott appears on Smart Talk to talk about comics and comic storytelling. He gives his take on influential artists such as Charles Schultz, creator of Peanuts and Charlie Bown, and Jack Kirby of Marvel Comics. And he talks about his own latest graphic novel, The Sculptor, about a young artist who makes a deal with death in an attempt to achieve artistic immortality.

Also on the program, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the animated TV special, A Charlie Brown Christmas with director Jill Panyard and cast members Seth Winnick and Samantha Koegler of a staged production of the show now playing at the Hershey Playhouse.

And we also re-visit a Smart Talk segment from December 2012. The Mechanicsburg-based folk duo, Voxology, joins us in the studio to perform some of their original seasonal music.
