What to look for on Smart Talk Thursday, October 15, 2015:

Columbine, Sandy Hook, Fort Hood, Virginia Tech, and now Roseburg, Oregon.  The latest mass shooting that left nine people dead at Umpqua Community College two weeks ago joins an already lengthy list of shooting incidents that have left hundreds dead and injured.

Afterwards, we asked why the gunman did it and what could have been done to stop him?  There are impassioned calls for gun control, more access to treatment for the mentally ill, or the media to stop giving the shooters the notoriety they crave.

All the while, the mass shootings continue on a fairly regular basis.  The FBI reports the number of active shooter incidents have more than doubled while casualties have nearly tripled over the last seven years.

We may not want to admit or even think about the possibility but schools, businesses and places where groups of people gather must have plans in place to deal with a shooting incident.

Appearing on Thursday's Smart Talk is Kevin Doss, Founder and CEO of Level 4 Security and one of the world's experts on protecting against a shooting incident.

Also, it is not an exaggeration to say there are too many children today who don't have adult supervision, companionship, guidance or mentorship.  The Big Brothers Big Sisters organization has been

doing just that for 100 years.

Joining us on the program are Maddie Young, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region and Rich Franchella, Complex Manager, Morgan Stanley, Camp Hill.
