Smart Talk: Got a question for Congressman Charlie Dent?

Written by Scott LaMar, Smart Talk Host/Executive Producer | Mar 19, 2014 3:09 PM

What to look for Smart Talk Thursday, March 20, 2014:

Congressman Charlie Dent appears on Thursday's Smart Talk to answer questions and discuss national and international issues.

The Republican represents the 15th District in the U.S. House of Representatives.  The 15th District includes portions of Dauphin, Lebanon, and Berks Counties as well as Lehigh and Northampton Counties.

We'll ask Congressman Dent about his thoughts on Russia annexing Crimea, which was part of Ukraine, and whether the U.S. has any options to pressure or even punish Russia in wake of the takeover of Crimea.

Dent was one of about a dozen Republicans who supported an extension of unemployment benefits to the long-term jobless.  A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators have proposed a plan to extend benefits for up to five months.  That proposal faces an uncertain future in the Republican majority House.

Dent also supports construction of the Keystone XL pipeline -- saying it would create more than 42,000 jobs.  Environmentalists want the pipeline scrapped.

Congressman Dent wants to designate employees who work a 30-hour week as full time to keep employers from reducing workers' hours in order to avoid paying health insurance benefits.

Do you have a question or comment for Congressman Charlie Dent?  Call 1-800-729-7532 between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Thursday, send an email to smarttalk@witf.org, or comment below.

Did he just say that no one wants to confront Russia militarily?

Then what were people like McCain refering to when this first happened...sure didn't sound like he want to go the diplomatic route.

And why do we have money to support other countries, but the ACA will bankrupt this country.

Bravo, Bill! It seems that Germany and the other European NATO allies should be the ones in the forefront handling this and NOT us. We should be willing to let them lead on this issue and support their decisions, but it is not up to us to "save the world". I believe we are a war-weary country. My 10-yr-old has not lived a day of her life that our country is not at war. If we were able to spend even half of our military budget on infrastructure, educating our youth, and providing for our poor what a better nation we would be!

    A listener emails:

So far what has happened in Europe has been virtually blood less.
This guy has his finger on the trigger. We have begun military exercises since this event, maybe he can go over and sit in the back of a jet or atop of a tank. A reactionary Like this guy is dangerous.
There is time. They're there already. Russia isn't Iraq they're military is second to ours, they supply energy to Europe.
So there is no reactionary muscle resolution to this.

    David emails:

Do you have any skin in the game? Tell me your kids are in a grunt, artillery unit stationed in Europe. And what kind of military time did you do. And I'm not talking ROTC. If all of your answers are no. Then it's another chicken hawk.
