What to look for on Smart Talk Tuesday, January 7, 2014:
Smart Talk's annual live broadcast from the Pennsylvania Farm Show is scheduled for Tuesday.
The broadcast provides a forum for a "State-of-Agriculture" in Pennsylvania. We'll examine the challenges facing Pennsylvania's farmers, what agriculture means to the state's economy, and how consumers are impacted.
First some statistics:
There are more than 62,000 farms and five million acres of farmland. The average farm has 124 acres.
According to the Department of Agriculture, the top five products in terms of revenue generated are dairy products, cattle and calves, greenhouse and nursery products, mushrooms, and chicken eggs.
Overall, agriculture has a $67 billion impact in Pennsylvania.
Joining us on the program will be Mike Pechert, Executive Deputy Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, David Smith, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Dairymen's Asscoiation, and Chris Herr, Executive Director of the PennAg Industries Association.
