Radio Smart Talk for Thursday, January 24:

Dr. Lewis Thayne -- the new president of Lebanon Valley College in Annville -- will appear on Thursday's Radio Smart Talk.

A discussion with the new or outgoing leaders of colleges and universities in Central Pennsylvania is a Radio Smart Talk staple.  It gives listeners an opportunity to learn more about the new leader's vision for the school, address current issues related to higher education, and describe the college's place in its local community.  Most colleges or universities are viewed as anchor institutions and see themselves as having a responsibility to give back and help their communities grow.

Annville itself has undergone a major overhaul in its downtown over the past decade and visitors will notice Lebanon Valley also has new buildings and facilities to add to the borough's transformation.

Dr. Thayne's appointment began last August so he's had a few months to observe and plan for the campus, that has more than 1600 undergraduate students.

    Email from Rachel, '08:

First of all, my congratulations to President Thayne. Welcome to LVC!
I had the distinct honor and pleasure of serving as a student member of the LVC Board of Trustees during my time in Annville. Through my interaction with members and donors - as well as my campus job as a Phonathon caller - I took a great interest in LVC's financial plans.

My question is this: How do you plan to balance your knowledge of a school with a larger endowment than LVC, with the donor participation-centric values that LVC is known for. How will your previous experiences shape the advancement vision for our beloved institution?

      Dear Rachel,

Thanks for listening and for your your comment. I believe alumni will be and must be a strategic asset. They can..you can...help our students and the college in many ways. I expect to build an advancement program that offers alumni some options for contributing to the college, one of which will be financially. I think people like to give their time and/or money where it is needed, where they know it will do some good, and where there is some positive momentum. We have all of those things at LVC.

    Email from Sabina,

Good Day: I am a serious hockey fan.Season ticket Hershey Bears.

Last year I learned that LVC Hockey plays home games at the Arena-Hershey Park.

I have been going to games this year. ALL the young men who play are not only good athletes but smart, funny and can hold a conversation not pock-marked with “you know”.

They are fine examples of what all colleges should have as representatives of student-athletes.

This praise also applies to the supportive, vocal and hockey savvy students who come to the games to cheer on their fellow students.
All of the LVC students are a credit to not only their parents but what must be a fabulous college experience at LVC.

PS... It was really really coooooold at the outdoor hockey game on Tuesday but what fun.

    Continue the good work.

Thanks for your comment. I share your enthusiasm for the ice hockey team. I attended the Wounded Warrior game in Hershey Arena and I was very proud of everything the team is doing, on the ice and off the ice. Thanks also for braving the cold.
