witf's Tim Lambert reports from Normandy on Winters statue unveiling; Harrisburg University President Mel Schiavelli

Radio Smart Talk for Wednesday, June 6:

Last month, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology President Dr. Mel Schiavelli announced he will be leaving the 11-year-old midstate institution to accept a position in Virginia.

Schiavelli will appear on Wednesday's Radio Smart Talk to discuss the school's first decade, science, technology, engineering, and math or STEM education and what the future looks like for Harrisburg University.

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology offered its first classes in 2005, was accredited in 2009 and built a $73 million, 16 story main campus facility in downtown Harrisburg.  More than a thousand students attend the university, which is considered the only STEM focused institution between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Schiavelli is leaving in July to become the executive vice president for academic and student services at Northern Virginia Community College -- the nation's second largest community college.

Harrisburg University has earned a reputation as being one of the city's anchor institutions in a short time but recent press reports have also cast light on the school's financial challenges.  Schiavelli himself was quoted as saying the university was "financially fragile."

It's one of several topics we'll address with Mel Schiavelli.

Also, as part of witf's Hang Tough: Dick Winters in Normandy project, Multimedia News Director Tim Lambert joins us from France to describe the unveiling of a new monument near the beaches where Allied troops came ashore on D-Day -- June 6, 1944.  The statue is in the likeness of Central PA's Major Dick Winters, who was immortalized in the book and film -- Band of Brothers.
