20 things people with cancer want you to know; witf Spelling Bee

Written by  Scott LaMar, Director of Radio Smart Talk

Radio Smart Talk for Friday, February 24:

witf's multimedia Facing Cancer Together initiative began almost a year ago with several goals in mind.  One of the most important was to educate.  We've learned about the different types of cancer, what causes the disease, the treatments and how to live with cancer.

However, Friday's Radio Smart Talk will be one of the best educational opportunities of all.

Emmy-Award winning journalist Lori Hope will appear on the program to discuss her book, Help Me Live -- 20 Things People With Cancer Want You to Know.

Hope writes that most people with cancer want to feel heard, respected, understood and valued; to laugh; to be loved and above all to love!  She says the book can be that lifeline.

Also, the 2012 Grand Championship of witf's Central PA Spelling Bee is scheduled for Saturday at the Public Media Center.  Thirty-four 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will compete to move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington D.C.

On Friday's Radio Smart Talk, Spelling Bee Coordinator Ruth Keim will join us to discuss the competition and lead a mini-spelling bee of witf staff members.

regarding cancer - this coming monday is a year since a very dear friend died of tongue cancer that she battled for more than 3 years. had her dentist or doctor caught it earlier, she would likely still be with us today, but it was caught late, and i think she was seriously overdosed by the radiation treatment that was supposed to save her, resulting in awful side effects. when the cancer later returned, she hadn't the strength to go thru that ordeal again. she stopped food and died. PLEASE! remind all to ask their dentists to look for oral cancers during each check-up. this sounds trivial, but it may save your or a loved one's life.

Guys: Interesting spelling section. After having lived in NC for a few years-- Scuppernong is a local (S. Atlantic) native American grape variety, along with Catawba grapes (different than Concord grapes of the NE). The wines Scuppernongs and Catawbas produced decades ago were very "foxy," which for a wine drinker is not a good thing. We gave a sample of a local wine, named "Carlos," to a young adult N. Carolinian. He tasted, grimaced, looked at the label, and said, "With a taste like that, it should be named 'Willie.'"

As a cancer survivor I want to say that there was not a hard turn between the two halves of today's show. Cancer is part of life and laughter is great medicine. As I stood in my kitchen laughing through the spelling bee, I thought, "This is just the kind of thing that was wonderful to hear in the midst of my treatments."
