25 Years: 'One Day More' at a Time

Written by  Joel Washok

Musical theater has become a staple in many nations worldwide. One of the most successful, Les Misérables, celebrated its 25th anniversary in October 2010. To mark the occasion, the show's producer, Cameron Mackintosh, staged three performances with an all-star cast of 300 actors and musicians.

The anniversary marks the show's opening in London at the Barbican Theatre on October 8, 1985. To capture the occasion, the show was staged and recorded at The O2 arena in London. WITF viewers will be able to watch this performance on Sunday, March 6th at 7pm.

Headlining the extraordinary event is Alfie Boe, playing the role of ex-convict and outcast Jean Valjean. Boe is one of Britain's leading tenors and a bestselling recording artist. No stranger to the stage, Boe has starred in many other productions, such as his Tony Award-winning performance in La Bohème.

One of Britain's most successful comic actors and writers, Matt Lucas, will play the inn owner and thief Thénardier. His partner in crime, Madame Thénardier, is portrayed by Jenny Galloway, who played the role for the 10th-anniversary of the production in 1995.

Lea Salonga portrays Fantine, the beautiful mother of Cosette. She is an international star after creating her role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Les Misérables is no stranger to Salonga, who played Fantine on Broadway and Eponine in London.

Norm Lewis, one of Salonga's former co-stars in Les Misérables, will perform the role of the inspector set on upholding the law, Javert. Lewis has played John in MissSaigon and Javert in the Broadway production of Les Misérables. His background with the role of Javert provides for an astonishing performance of the character.

A familiar name to many, Nick Jonas plays the role of Marius, the student revolutionary. Jonas has portrayed the role of Gavroche on Broadway and for the final nine months of the show's run.

Rounding out the cast is Camilla Kerslake, who plays the role of the beautiful daughter of Fantine, Cosette. Kerslake is a crossover artist from the English classical genre. Her debut album shot to number four in the classical chart.

It is undisputed that Les Misérables is one of the most popular musicals ever written, having been seen by 56 million people in 42 countries and in 21 different languages, with new productions opening continually around the world. Seven more productions are scheduled to open in the near future.

The recording of the 10th-anniversary Royal Albert Hall Gala concert has sold millions of copies worldwide. It is one of the best-selling musical videos in the UK. The 25th anniversary is sure to amaze.
