(Harrisburg) -- A midstate school district is accused of misspending hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grant money. State Auditor General Jack Wagner says a special audit by his office reveals the School District of York misused some $834,000 from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant program. Calling it a blatant misuse of taxpayer dollars, he says boxes and boxes of laptop computers and athletic equipment sit unused in storage rooms as a result. "The number of children that the School District of York indiciated would be part of this program were one-third less than their projections," he says. "They knew factually they did not need this much equipment to meet the requirements of the grant program." The special audit was requested by the federal Department of Education. Pointing blame at both the district and Pennsylvania Education Department, Wagner cautions the problem may not be just in one school or with one grant program. He adds the "spend it or lose it" mentality when it comes to grants must change.
