York mayor signs city's first new zoning ordinance in 20 years

(York) -- A central Pennsylvania city has revamped its zoning ordinance for the first time in more than two decades. York Mayor Kim Bracey recently signed off on the new plan, which has been approved by city council members and the city's Planning Commission. Kevin Schreiber, York's director of economic and community development, says the plan provides oversight of off-campus housing for York College students. "This is actually the city's first legal foray into acknowledging student housing and helping to control it," he says. "This zoning ordinance actually acknowledges and offers approval of student housing in the college neighborhood having to meet certain livable conditions." Schreiber says the plan also aims to promote business in the downtown area and help make the Codorus Corridor more environmentally-friendly. Enforcement of the ordinance will begin next month.
