Utilities working to restore power to tens of thousands in central PA

Written by  Craig Layne, Tim Lambert and Stephanie Reighart

(Undated) -- Additional utility crews have been brought into the midstate to help restore power to tens of thousands of people in the wake of this past weekend's rare October snow storm. As of 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, some 78,600 PPL, Met Ed and Adams Electric customers are still in the dark. The hardest hit areas are in Lancaster, York and Berks counties. Lissette Santana of PPL Electric Utilities says line workers are the most visible part of the effort, but they require lots of support to get the job done. "We have brought in hundreds of additional employees, working behind the scenes as customer service reps, system dispatchers and operators and analysts supporting the storm response," she says. Santana says the utility has been making "slow and steady" progress. She says fallen trees are the biggest obstacle, since many are blocking roadways and keeping crews from getting to the scene of downed power lines. The utility expects repair work in some areas could last well into tomorrow. One of the areas where power remains out is Lewisberry, York County. Ski Roundtop has been using generators since Saturday afternoon. General Manager Ron Hawkes says the surprise snow storm will only whet skiers appetites. "There's probably some folks in their backyard building rails and skiing or snowboarding and using the rails in the backyard or something," he says. "It won't be long until we're open, but not quite yet. The resort could open for the season as soon as early December.
