(Harrisburg) -- The state's most recent unemployment numebrs show signs of improvement across the commonwealth, but those gains are not reflected in the midstate's jobless numbers. November's statewide unemployment rate is 7.9 percent, down from 8.1 percent in October, and below the national rate of 8.6 percent. Retailers adding staff for the holiday shopping season could not seem to overcome job losses in other areas of seasonal employment in the midstate. The so-called York-Hanover Metropolitan Statistic Area tied the Sunbury, Northumberland County, area for the greatest unempoloyment percentage increase in the midstate at two-tenths of a percent - rising to 7.8 and 8.8 percent, respectively. The Lancaster, Lebanon, Reading, Chambersburg and Gettysburg areas all saw increases of one-tenth of a percent. The Harrisburg-Carlisle MSA and Juniata County saw unemployment levels stay steady at 7.1 percent each. The Pottsville area's jobless rate was also unchanged at 9.4 percent, the highest in the midstate.
