(Harrisburg) -- A measure to regulate indoor tanning salons has the unanimous approval of a state Senate committee. Under the new rules, minors would need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian before using a tanning facility for the first time, and anyone under the age of 14 would need a doctor’s note. This past spring, state House lawmakers considered banning teens from tanning salons. But Senator Pat Browne, a Republican of Lehigh County, says most states have gone the way of regulations. "Just outright banning it at this point I don’t think there’s a necessity for that, just as long as parents and children are making the appropriate decision and this bill will make sure that happens," Browne says. He is sponsoring the regulations bill, which will require mandatory initial inspections of all indoor tanning facilities, and allow the state Department of Health to conduct random inspections after that. He says the new licensing fees will help offset inspection costs.
