(Harrisburg) -- The city of Harrisburg appears to have found a temporary fix to housing stray animals. Harrisburg police have moved a temporary animal shelter from the bureau's garage in the city government complex to a larger facility on City Island. The shelter is equipped with two large ‘walking cages’, food, water, straw, and donated dog food. Officer volunteers will clean, feed, and walk the animals in custody. A spokesman for Mayor Linda Thompson says the city contract with the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area should be in place next week. A billing dispute resulted in a suspension of service provided by the society. It also led to police issuing an internal memo telling officers to either adopt stray dogs, drop them off at an undisclosed location, or kill them if they seem threatening.
