Strategic plan in the works for aging and disabled support programs

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Harrisburg) -- Providing services for seniors and people with disabilities in Pennsylvania can be a challenge, in the midst of dwindling state funding. So, the state Department of Aging has begun to craft a four-year strategic plan on the issue. Dauphin County Commissioner George Hartwick says there’s no doubt the biggest challenge facing senior programs is finding dollars to cover the cost. He says one way the commonwealth can help is by allocating more funding from its Lottery Fund. "We’re quite disappointed that the state continues to sit on a 150-million-dollar lottery fund reserve that could certainly be used by the state Department of Aging and every agency on aging across the commonwealth to be able to meet the needs of our growing senior population," Hartwick says. State Department of Aging Secretary Brian Duke says he’s not looking to boost the agency’s budget in light of the current state of the economy. Instead, he says, the state hopes to encourage philanthropy and local partnerships to ensure seniors and disabled Pennsylvanians have access to necessary programs across the state.
