Steinwehr Avenue improvement project gets boost from federal government

(Gettysburg) -- A midstate roadway improvement project is among several in the state to receive part of nearly $19 million in federal funding. The ongoing Steinwehr Avenue upgrade in Gettysburg has been granted more than $3 million from the Federal Highway Administration's Public Lands Highway grant program. Borough Manager Florence Ford says the project is designed to improve sidewalks, pedestrian safety, and traffic flow in order to make the tourist destination easier to navigate. "Steinwehr Avenue has its own type of vibe," she says. "It has a lot of hotels down that way, too, and hotel visitors like to walk around at night and go shopping. This would allow a better pedestrian flow, a safer pedestrian flow, plus allow accessibility." The first phase of the project ended last month. Ford says the next step, which includes work on the roadway running from Washington Street to the Gettysburg National Military Park, could be completed as early as 2013. An expansion project on the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Byway Seminary Ridge Trail in Gettysburg also received grant funding.
