State's largest solar project to be built in central Pennsylvania

Written by  Megan Lello, witf Reporter and Producer

(Harrisburg) -- A Lancaster college has partnered with an energy company to help forge the state's largest solar project to date. Franklin and Marshall College will purchase some of the power generated at the ground-mounted solar farm over a seven-year period. Delaware County-based Community Energy is constructing the facility on more than 30 acres in East Drumore Township, Lancaster County. Community Energy's co-founder and CEO, Brent Alderfer, tells witf's Radio Smart Talk the property could eventually be returned for use as farmland. "We've put up a bond with the township so after 25 or 30 years, there's the financial ability to remove it and have the farmland actually improved in organic content and agricultural use," he says. The solar farm would produce about 7,500 megawatt hours of electricity annually, or enough to power 950 homes. It's expected to be completed by the end of this summer.
