State's child protection task force gets ready for work

Written by  Craig Layne and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- The new panel tasked with reviewing the commonwealth's child protection laws -- and procedures for reporting child abuse -- is about to begin its work. Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler will chair the Task Force on Child Protection. The former judge says its important the state creates laws that are tough, yet realistic enough "that (they) place responsibilities and criminal burdens that we can actually expect the public and juries to support," Heckler says. He says the panel hopes to hear from experts during at least five meetings between now and September 30th. The 10-member task force's final report is due on November 30th. The panel's creation is a response to the outcry following the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. The former Penn State assistant football coach denies charges he molested 10 boys over a 15-year period.
