State lawmakers learn about stink bugs

Written by  Craig Layne and Radio PA

(Undated) -- State lawmakers have met to look at ways to deal with Pennsylvania's stink bug infestation, which was responsible for damaging 10 to 20 percent of the state's fruit crop last year. Experts including Ed Van Istendal, from the PA Pest Management Association, spoke with members of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees during "Ag Progress Days" in State College. He says the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug can almost always find some way into buildings. "You're going to be finding them looking for places under siding and around flashing and under rocks and under the loose bark of trees, many of the same spots that other critters lok for the spend the winter," Van Istendal says. He says several models of stink bug traps are available, but a homeowner's best bet is to caulk shut all the openings into a house. He says hiring an exterminator to treat a stink bug infestation can cost up to $650.
