State could soon leave behind sales and use tax on aircraft work

(Harrisburg) -- A new measure to eliminate a sales and use tax on aircraft sales, maintenance, parts, and repair is being lauded by supporters for its potential to create thousands of jobs in the state. The state House of Representatives is expected to vote on the bill, sponsored by Democrat Peter Daley of Fayette County, in the near future. Daley says the legislation would open up jobs for Pennsylvanians in a number of areas. "If enacted, it will open the door for the aviation industry to set up shop in Pennsylvania airports, with businesses that service aircraft, sell parts, perform routine inspections, and even build and sell aircraft," he says. Daley says the commonwealth is losing competent aircraft workers to other states without such a tax, like Ohio. Other supporters say the tax should be eliminated since more planes are now traveling into the Marcellus Shale region of the state due to natural gas drilling. But the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center has said the bill is a so-called "luxury tax break" that would create subsidies for the wealthy.
